Chicago Steel Hockey in Geneva, IL Hosted First Annual Wiener Dog Races to Benefit Rescue Warriors Corp.
GENEVA, Ill., Feb. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- A popular junior hockey league tradition, Wiener Dog Racing took place at the Fox Valley Ice Arena on Saturday, February 17, 2018, as the 2016-2017 Clark Cup Champions Chicago Steel Hockey hosted their first annual Wiener Dog Races. Fans were treated during the first and second intermissions to the Steel's Wiener Dog Races, with Monty, a one-year-old dachshund born in Denver, beating 16 other dogs to earn the championship trophy, edging out fellow finalists Asti, Buster and Tarragon. Race proceeds went to Rescue Warriors Corp., an Elgin-based nonprofit whose mission is to save abandoned animals from being euthanized. The organization is run by volunteers and generous supporters who have provided their time and financial support to help with their mission. The winner received a prize package provided by Woofbeach. During the game, The Madison Capitols (19-18-1-2, 41 pts.) stormed back from a 3-0 deficit, scoring eight of the game's final nine goals en route to an 8-4 win over the Chicago Steel (19-18-1-3, 42 pts.) Saturday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Cade Borchardt notched a career-high four points (2-2–4) for the Capitols.
Chicago Steel's season-long seven-game homestand continues next weekend with a pair of games at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Friday, Feb. 23 is Military Appreciation Night presented by Grunt Style as the Steel take on the Green Bay Gamblers. 2016-2017 Championship Season
Last season, the Chicago Steel set a new all-time team record with 38 wins and 81 points in the regular season, making its way to the postseason for the first time in nine years, and first since the team relocated to the Fox Valley in 2015. Chicago defeated the Youngstown Phantoms in the Eastern Conference Semifinals, 3 game to 2, before knocking off the defending Eastern Conference Champions, the Dubuque Fighting Saints, in the Eastern Conference Final, 3 games to 1.
