Stockholm was appointed the first European Green Capital in 2010. Having a long track record of green urban development, the city which has reduced CO2 emissions per capita by 25 percent since 1990, is developing a new eco-modeled district in its eastern part, the Stockholm Royal Seaport. Fortum, the leading energy company focusing on low emissions, resource efficiency and energy security, is currently designing and installing a smart electricity grid in this district, which will help reduce CO2 to 1.5 tonnes per person per year by 2020. Stockholm hosted the first Green Capital Conference where city officials, politicians and officers gathered to discuss the needs of growing cities and sustainable policies. Vitoria-Gasteiz and Nantes were appointed European Green Capitals 2012-2013 respectively will carry on the tradition from Stockholm and Hamburg, winner of 2011 award.
