New York Yankees right fielder Nick Swisher, a self-proclaimed "big kid at heart" who still loves to build, helped to kick off the building extravaganza Tuesday by building and placing the first LEGO brick on the base, and was honored by LEGO Master Builders with a LEGO mosaic of his team's logo.
An icon of the Manhattan since 1976, the Big Apple -- in LEGO form -- was constructed over three days in the iconic Channel Garden of Rockefeller Center, measured 16 feet tall to the top of the stem, more than 10 feet wide, and weighed two tons.
Families outside of the metro New York area are also encouraged to spend quality time building together. Inspiration and step-by-step instructions for other regional icons and objects, straight from the Model Shop of LEGO Master Builders, can be found by visiting www.LEGOfamilytime.com.
The LEGO Store at Rockefeller Center features a wide selection of LEGO products and merchandise, along with the world's largest Pick-a-Brick wall, 50 custom-built, New York-themed LEGO vignettes and a Master Builder Bar where children can explore the virtual world of LEGO play through video, virtual building instructions and gaming. The store, like all LEGO Stores, also features a space for birthday parties, free monthly mini build activities and monthly LEGO Club meetings.
