CARLSBAD, Calif., April 13, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- ViaSat Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT), an innovator in broadband and communication technologies and services, is proud to announce its Exede® In The Air in-flight Wi-Fi® system received the Via Satellite Excellence Award in the vertical impact category for In-Flight Connectivity (IFC).
Exede In The Air has transformed in-flight connectivity and entertainment by providing business and leisure travelers an internet experience that is eight times faster than competitive services, and allows for web browsing and the ability to stream videos and movies. Airlines gain a sustainable advantage by offering a highly-differentiated internet experience that will attract passengers, build loyalty and support high-bandwidth crew and operations applications.
"New travel platforms that compare onboard airline amenities empower today's traveler to choose a better flight experience. Airlines can no longer rely on a basic or good Wi-Fi service; instead, they must offer a service that focuses on best Wi-Fi performance and quality," said Mark Dankberg, chairman and CEO of ViaSat. "Our leadership in high-capacity satellite technology enables us to offer a best-quality service that meets the needs of today's connected traveler, while providing airlines the competitive advantage needed through service differentiation. We are honored to be recognized by Via Satellite, as the Excellence Award is a true testament to the new ground we're breaking in the IFC market."
ViaSat's high-capacity Ka-band satellite network enables the Exede service to deliver 12 Mbps to each connected passenger, as compared to competing services that only provide a single "bucket" of bandwidth to the aircraft for passengers to share. Comparatively, with the Exede In The Air service, airlines are finding that Wi-Fi take rates on average are three to four times the historical rate, with as many as 148 simultaneous devices connected during one flight.
"We congratulate ViaSat on receiving a Via Satellite Excellence Vertical Impact Award for IFC/Maritime," said Mark Holmes, editorial director, Aerospace Group, Via Satellite and Avionics Magazines. "We continue to be impressed with the company's Exede service in the competitive airborne broadband market. The company is playing a key role in shaping this exciting market for satellite companies. With key contract wins with the likes of JetBlue, El Al and United Airlines, ViaSat has made considerable progress in this market in recent times. We look forward to what they do next."
Via Satellite's annual Excellence Awards salutes the innovative companies, technologies, campaigns and people who've helped shape the success of the global satellite industry. Winners were selected by the Excellence Awards committee, and were announced during the Satellite 2015 conference in Washington, DC.
