BOSTON, Feb. 28, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The VHL Alliance today announced the winner of its VHL Mobile App Challenge. Nearly two dozen teams from some of the top Universities in the US submitted entries. The result is a modern and user-friendly app that provides a resource for patients, caregivers, and health care professionals to better manage care of von Hippel-Lindau (VHL), a genetic cancer condition.
"The VHL Alliance seeks to find a Cure for Cancer through advancing research into VHL and its manifestations. Taking our knowledge and putting it into action by educating patients, caregivers, and physicians is key to meeting our mission. The VHLApp is meant to complement our website, conferences, discussion calls, and other resources that seek to make living, managing, and thriving with VHL easier to do," says VHLA Executive Director, Dr. Ilene Sussman.
The app is available today for free on iOS and on the Android platform in the future. The contest winner and developer is Cody Craig from The Ohio State University. Craig, a computer science and engineering student from an agricultural family in Ohio, hopes that "patients from all over the world will be able to benefit from it." In recognition of his excellent work, Craig will receive a one-time grant of $5,000, funded by an anonymous donor. On Craig's achievement, Dr. Sussman said "we are extremely impressed and appreciative of the high quality work that all of the participants submitted. He should be extremely proud of his achievement and we wish him great success as he pursues a career in agricultural technology."
