VHI Releases Annual Report on Efficiency of Health Care Providers
RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 15, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Virginia Health Information (VHI) released its 2010 Industry Report: Virginia Hospital & Nursing Facilities, which contains efficiency rankings along with information on providers' costs, profits and charity care. This data on the efficiency of ambulatory surgical centers, hospitals and nursing facilities is particularly important for businesses and health care purchasers.
The 2010 Industry Report contains a Composite Efficiency and Productivity (CEP) Score — an overall efficiency ranking for hospitals which considers indicators on cost, productivity and utilization. "This score, when examined in conjunction with data on health care quality, can help businesses and individuals know the value of their health care dollar in different treatment venues," said VHI Executive Director Michael Lundberg. Five of the ten hospitals with the highest efficiency ranking are appearing in the top ten for a second consecutive year:
- Riverside Walter Reed
- Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center
- Winchester Medical Center
- Sentara Bayside Hospital
- Sentara Leigh Hospital
The Industry Report contains a total of eighteen hospital indicators including charity care contributions, staffing levels, profit margins and average costs and payments per admission.
One notable trend is the increase in the number of licensed ambulatory surgical centers, which has grown from 20 in 2000 to 49 in 2010.
The Industry Report is targeted to the needs of employers and purchasers of health care and the data has been used for more than a decade to help build networks and negotiate provider contracts. It was developed collaboratively among VHI, health care providers and principal investigator, Dr. Ramesh K. Shukla while at the Williamson Institute at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Information from the 2010 Industry Report is also online at www.vhi.org along with additional information on hospital quality of care. Contact Virginia Health Information at 1-877-VHI-INFO or [email protected].
