BROOMFIELD, Colo., March 21, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Vesmir Inc., creator of PetroDE, the dynamic geospatial intelligence platform for making collaborative, data-informed decisions, today announced that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued US Patent No. 9,594,773, titled "Pattern-retaining Method for Displaying Large Volumes of Geographic Based Data Using Statistical Depopulation." The patented technology, invented by Dylan Herron, Senior Software Engineer, supports PetroDE's mapping technology for statistical depopulation of large datasets.
The new technology solves the problem of displaying increasingly large datasets quickly, while preserving the overall trends. "It's a two-sided algorithm. While it provides more points in geographically dense areas of data, it still retains singular data points that are on their own as outliers," explains Herron.
The process uses smart depopulation to visually remove data points that don't fall into either of these categories while greatly increasing speed and preserving overall trends. Previous methods focused only on either dense areas or sparse areas, but didn't have the capability of displaying both.
"We didn't want to lose the density information. We felt it was important to be able to see the overall trends when looking at it from both a macro and micro perspective," adds Herron.
"We are thrilled to see Dylan's research and development recognized by the USPTO," commented Alan Lindsey, CEO of PetroDE. "We know our clients greatly benefit from the time saved by using this capability."
The algorithm allows PetroDE users to quickly and easily search, display, and analyze any dataset without worrying about project boundaries or dataset size. "Solutions can be found in half the time when all your data is in one place and ready for analysis at real-time speed," adds Lindsey.
