Vertica Continues to Outperform the Analytic Database Market
Ends 2009 with yet another record setting quarter and year
BILLERICA, Mass., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Vertica is entering the new decade at full speed after ending 2009 with its best year and best quarter ever. The company's remarkable growth in this current economic climate is proof positive that businesses are desperate for better and faster data analysis and are turning to the Vertica Analytic Database to solve their biggest data problems.
Last year, the analytic database company more than doubled its customer base and reached its 100th customer milestone in record time for a data warehouse vendor. As evidenced by recent analyst reports, Vertica also widened the gap with other emerging vendors in the analytic database market. In addition to signing dozens of new deals with its traditional base of telecommunications and financial companies, Vertica established strongholds with healthcare, retail and Web-based knowledge companies with new customers such as Guess? Inc., Zynga, ForeclosureRadar, Visible Measures and SDI Health.
Vertica continued its strong push with its direct sales approach while implementing a strategic channel partner program which now represents more than 20% of the company's revenues, including deals with Lancope, Glassbeam and LogMatrix. And across all segments, customer relationships only got bigger in both deal size and data volume managed, as a significant number of Vertica customers signed seven-figure agreements and the size of customers' data warehouses surpassed all-time levels.
"The common factor behind all these successes is the urgent need for what Vertica calls high velocity analytics," said Ralph Breslauer, Vertica CEO. "The best and brightest companies are teaming with Vertica because they can no longer wait an hour, a day, a week, or a month for insight from their huge and rapidly growing data volumes. They see Vertica as the best way to tame their big data problems and integrate real-time business intelligence into every corner of their organization."
New products and accolades
On the product front, Vertica announced a major upgrade of the Vertica Analytic Database in May (v3.0) and again in August (v3.5) with a new FlexStore™ architecture that delivers additional performance gains for a broader range of analytic applications. Perhaps the most talked about technological feature was Vertica's unique integration with MapReduce. While competitors built their own flavor of MapReduce functionality directly into their databases, with version 3.5, Vertica introduced native support for MapReduce via connectivity to the standard Hadoop framework. This unique combination of MPP analytic database and MPP compute framework gives enterprises the flexibility to process large sets of structured and unstructured data and make them available to business users at Web speeds. In addition, Vertica announced a strategic partnership with Cloudera, the commercial Hadoop company, to ensure ongoing seamless MapReduce integration.
Vertica also made big news in the cloud computing market in 2009, teaming with RightScale, Talend and JasperSoft to offer the world's first complete BI stack for the cloud.
As with past years, Vertica's technological and market advances helped it earn a number of industry awards and recognition. For example, a recent data warehouse market study from The Information Difference research firm has Vertica leading the pack of next-generation analytic database vendors in challenging the traditional database and data warehouse players. The Data Warehouse Landscape Q4 2009 report also cites Vertica as one of the top two vendors in overall customer satisfaction. And in February, Vertica was once again named a "Company to Watch" in TechWeb's Intelligent Enterprise 2009 Editors' Choice Awards, an honor bestowed to an elite class of the most influential technology companies impacting smart enterprises.
Lastly, Vertica extended its ecosystem of OEM and reseller partnerships in 2009, teaming with companies like Datric, Nevis, Integra, Subex, Sigma Systems and others to help their customer tackle the heaviest BI workloads.
