LINTHICUM, Md., Dec. 13, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Versant Health, a leading national managed eye health and vision plan company, honors Safe Toys and Gifts month by reminding parents and loved ones of small children to avoid giving gifts that could jeopardize a child's sight.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, more than 250,000 toy-related injuries occur every year, with two-thirds affecting children age 12 and younger, and one-third involving children under the age of five. Of these injuries, 45% affected the face and head.
"Injuries due to toys can range from relatively minor to extremely severe," says Dr. Mark Ruchman, board-certified ophthalmic plastic surgeon and Chief Medical Officer of Versant Health. "The most commonly seen are corneal abrasions, or scratches to the front of the eye. However, more sight-threatening injuries can include corneal ulcers, detached retinas, ocular bleeding, and even trauma-induced cataracts."
To reduce the risk of potential eye injuries, avoid toys with any type of projectile, including water balloons and water guns; toy fishing poles; aerosol "silly" string; laser pointers; and toys with sharp points.
