Vernier Provides STEM Educators with Resources for Collecting Data During the Great American Eclipse
Educators are encouraged to share scientific data collected during the total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017
BEAVERTON, Ore., March 30, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On August 21, 2017, individuals across the United States will have the opportunity to experience a total solar eclipse for the first time in 38 years. To help science and STEM educators use the Great American Eclipse as a learning experience, Vernier Software & Technology is providing resources and tips for viewing the eclipse, and they are encouraging educators to share data collected during the event.
"A total solar eclipse is a truly amazing—and very rare—event," said David Vernier, co-founder of Vernier and a former physics teacher. "To help make the most of this phenomenon, we are providing a variety of resources about the eclipse and how to incorporate data collection into the viewing experience."
To safely view the total solar eclipse, Vernier is offering certified eclipse viewing glasses. Educators can purchase class packs of 40 glasses on the Vernier website for $16. Vernier is also giving away eclipse glasses to teachers (one per teacher) this week at the NSTA National Conference in Los Angeles, CA at its booth (#1625).
To help educators collect data during the eclipse, Vernier is offering information on collecting light, temperature, and wind speed data with applicable sensors, such as the Vernier Light Sensor, UVA and UVB Sensors, Surface Temperature Sensor, and Anemometer, among others. Educators can also access reference materials about the eclipse, safety tips, and more.
Educators are encouraged to share data and pictures from their solar eclipse experience by emailing [email protected] or posting on social media using the hashtag #VernierEclipse. After the eclipse, Vernier will compile and provide a summary of the data collected from educators across the country.
