Verizon CIO Appointed to National Institute of Standards and Technology's Advisory Body
NEW YORK, March 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Shaygan Kheradpir, executive vice president and chief information officer for Verizon Communications, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, effective April 1.
The Visiting Committee on Advanced Technology reviews and makes recommendations regarding general policy for NIST, its organization, budget and programs, within the framework of applicable national policies as set forth by the president and Congress. The committee submits an annual report to the U.S. Commerce Secretary for submission to Congress.
The committee serves as a private-sector advisory body for the institute, which is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce and is based in Gaithersburg, Md. The committee provides advice to NIST management on the institute's strategic direction, policy and programs.
As CIO, Dr. Kheradpir, who holds a doctorate in electrical engineering, is responsible for the information technology initiatives of all Verizon's business units. Prior to assuming his present responsibilities in 2007, he was senior vice president and chief information officer for Verizon Telecom. He leads technology development and innovation for key Verizon initiatives including having developed and implemented the systems and products for Verizon's all-fiber network -- FiOS.
Kheradpir was named a distinguished member of the CIO Hall of Fame by CIO magazine in 2007 for his significant contributions to business and society through leadership in the development, management and use of information technology. He is a member of the Cornell University Engineering Council, chair of the CIO Council for the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) and a board member of the YMCA of Greater New York.
He has written more than 20 journal papers and holds several U.S. patents. The National Academy of Engineering selected him as one of the nation's 85 outstanding young engineers in 1996.
