Verde Technologies® Presents Data on Abuse Deterrent Technology for the Destruction of Unwanted Drugs
Study Sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Verde Technologies®, a Minneapolis-based company, announced today data was presented for the first time on patented technology that renders prescription drugs ineffective.
"Evaluation of an Inexpensive In-Home Deactivation System for Disposal of Unwanted Psychoactive Drugs," was presented by Andrew Korey, Ph.D., at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Meeting in San Diego, CA. The study was supported by Federal funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, National Institutes of Health, and Department of Health and Human Services. The abundance of unused and unwanted drugs in the home leads to abuse, human safety and environmental risks. The study examined the ability of Medsaway SP® to deactivate six prescription psychoactive medications in a variety of forms. The study results showed within eight hours a vast majority of medication was adsorbed by activated carbon and that on average, only 0.3% of the adsorbed drug was found to be water-leachable.
"Our research and development efforts are focused on an abuse deterrent technology for unwanted drug deactivation that can be conveniently accomplished in any setting, including the home or clinic," said Carter Anderson, Verde President and Chief Technology Officer. "In addition," continued Anderson, "We are also pleased to partner with Mallinckrodt Pharmaceutical manufacturers to make this technology available as a means to help prevent unwanted drug diversion."
"There is a large unmet national need for this technology. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has deemed prescription drug abuse an epidemic," said Jason Sundby, Partner and COO, Atlas Capital Partners and Verde Board member. Sundby continued, "Verde is offering a solution, proven through research. If action is taken to destroy drugs, then we should be able to dramatically impact the epidemic."
