Velano Vascular Appoints Steven M. Altschuler, MD to Corporate Advisory Board
Former CEO of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) brings more than three decades of clinical, academic and leadership experience
SAN FRANCISCO and PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Velano Vascular, a medical technology company transforming and enhancing the care experience for hospitalized patients and their practitioners, announced the appointment of Steven M. Altschuler, M.D., to the company's Corporate Advisory Board. Dr. Altschuler is a renowned healthcare executive with diverse experience in healthcare delivery, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Altschuler served as the CEO of The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from 2000 until his retirement in June 2015. He held several other positions at the hospital, including physician-in-chief and chief of the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. In these roles, he led the development of new patient-care delivery models, as well as academic and research support mechanisms, and improved physician-hospital administration relationships which fostered growth of the Hospital's clinical, research and educational programs.
"Steve's decades of leadership experience at the helm of one of the nation's most prestigious institutions for pediatric research and treatment will significantly inform Velano Vascular's team in achieving our mission," said Eric M. Stone, co-founder and CEO of Velano Vascular. "Tremendous need and opportunity exist for a less traumatic and more humane approach to inpatient blood draws, and Steve's guidance will help us meet this need."
Thirty-four inpatient pediatric blood draws are conducted every minute in the United States alone, while 44 percent of pediatric venipunctures require more than one stick to successfully draw blood. Velano Vascular has developed a proprietary technology that reduces the need for needle sticks (clinically known as venipunctures) during blood draws in the hospital. The company's technology is designed to reduce unnecessary pain and anxiety for patients, including children, receiving medications and hydration via intravenous (IV) delivery, while providing a safer work environment for healthcare providers conducting blood draws.
"Velano Vascular's emphasis on the patient experience for children, their families and caregivers represents one of the most enlightened care-delivery improvements in healthcare today," said Altschuler. "I'm proud to support the entrepreneurial efforts of a former pediatric patient and a locally trained practitioner as they seek to enhance the quality of pediatric inpatient care."
