Vehicle Safety in China: MESSRING Crash Test Facility Receives Prestigious Award
MUNICH, Germany and CHONGQING, China, December 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --
Expert jury names CAERI crash test facility in Chongqing "Crash Test Facility of the Year 2014" / State-of-the-art facility represents a milestone for Automotive China
The crash test facility designed and constructed by MESSRING and installed in Chongqing, China received the significant "Crash Test Facility of the Year 2014" award. The owner and operator of the expansive complex is the Chinese state testing authority CAERI (China Automotive Engineering Research Institute Co, LTD). The award is presented annually by the specialized English publishing company UKIP, and has become something of an institution within the automotive and safety testing industry. After 2012, this is now the third time the award has been given to a facility that was designed and built by MESSRING. The system, which began operation in May 2013, sets completely new global standards and offers the testing authority a never-before-seen variety of tests and level of precision.
Dave Payne, manager of vehicle development at Ford, explains on behalf of the expert jury, why they selected the facility from CAERI as the first-place winner: "China may be something of a latecomer to the auto industry but the investments in state of the art proving grounds and laboratories like this crash facility will make it a force to be reckoned with."
The renowned publishing company UKIP has presented the coveted award since 2006, in order to honor the latest outstanding new developments and achievements of individual companies in the automotive industry. The independent jury is comprised of automotive experts and experienced industry journalists from different media outlets in the automotive and safety testing industry, all of whom can draw upon extensive experience and expertise when making their decisions.
The award is also a great honor for the state agency CAERI, as Sun Hao, director of vehicle safety at CAERI, emphatically states: "As a state-operated institution, we believe our most important duty is to improve road safety on China's streets. We can only achieve this when we have the world's best testing equipment at our disposal. Together with out partner MESSRING, we succeeded in building a facility that operates with the highest-possible precision. The new crash test facility in Chongqing represents a milestone for CAERI and for vehicle safety in China overall."
Considering the dimensions of the construction work involved on its own, the project in Chongqing is one-of-a-kind. The complex has total floor space of 25,000 m2, the acceleration track for automobile tests has a length of 294 meters (200 meters of which are covered, with the rest outdoors), and a second, variable-angle, oblique impact track was installed for car-to-car tests that can be adjusted at any angle to the main acceleration track. This makes it possible to simulate a broad spectrum of collision scenarios involving two vehicles.
The approximately 300-meter sled system at CAERI was equipped with the tried and tested MESSRING MicroTrack system. The sled system at CAERI is powered by two electric propulsion systems developed especially for use in crash tests. Together, the two electric motors have a combined power rating of 2.4 megawatts. This allows vehicles weighing a total of up to five tons to be accelerated to a speed of 120 km/h before they collide with the impact block. Even crash tests with 25-ton trucks and buses can be simulated with this system - a unique capability possessed only by the facility in China.
MESSRING has designed and constructed ten crash test facilities in China in recent years. Considering the sheer size of the project and the capabilities offered by the system, the project in Chongqing is one-of-a-kind, however.
