RICHARDSON, Texas, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- VCE, the pioneer and worldwide leader in converged infrastructure, today announced increased customer adoption of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) on VCE™ converged infrastructure systems. VCE converged solutions allow IT organizations to cost-effectively and easily deploy VDI to meet critical end-user needs without compromising compliance, security and availability. Today, 35% of VCE customers – representing approximately 500 enterprises globally, across all industries – use VCE converged infrastructure solutions for VDI, leveraging leading software such as VMware Horizon 6 and Citrix XenDesktop.
This momentum is fueled by VCE's expanded converged infrastructure portfolio – Blocks, Racks and Appliances – which provides customers a choice of simple solutions that seamlessly scale from hundreds to thousands of virtual desktop seats to meet current and projected VDI demands. The benefits of VDI are real. For example with VMware Horizon 6 on VCE converged infrastructure IT can centrally manage images to streamline management, reduce costs, and maintain compliance. End users access their hosted desktops and applications via a unified workspace with consistently great experiences across devices, locations, media, and connections. Current VCE customers are increasingly choosing VCE Technology Extensions for Storage as a highly affordable, flexible way to deploy VDI using their existing VCE Vblock® Systems.
A recent IDC Analyst Connection identifies several key benefits of converged infrastructure-based offerings that are making these systems increasingly become a preferred platform for VDI deployments. For example, converged infrastructure systems allow the supporting infrastructure to be easily sized and tuned for VDI based on an organization's requirements, helping to avoid the risks and costs of "VDI stall" and enable delivery of services to up to thousands of users. IDC also notes that enterprises' long-term success with converged VDI solutions depends on several factors, including:
McCoy Global, a multinational manufacturer and distributor of innovative high-performance drilling equipment for the oil and gas industry, has virtualized 97 percent of the company's end-user computing environment using VMware Horizon on a Vblock System with EMC XtremIO all-Flash storage. This converged solution has enabled McCoy to gain increased end-user computing performance to accelerate innovation and competitive advantage. Additional benefits include:
"Our decision to run our virtual desktop environment on Vblock has enabled McCoy to become more agile with delivering IT resources and driving business outcomes and market differentiation. With the improved availability of end-user computing applications, the IT organization has experienced a reduction of support calls by 47 percent, which is just one of several examples of how our teams have more time to focus on innovation that will drive our business," said Charlie Chmura, Information Technology Manager, McCoy Global.
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFBMC) is a nationally recognized, fully integrated academic medical center and health system based in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. WFBMC purchased and deployed three Vblock Systems to provide the infrastructure for its new software-defined data center, Wake Cloud, with a goal of going from 22 percent to 96 percent virtualized in 18 months. The environment supports its VDI deployment with Citrix XenDesktop as well as the medical center's upgrade to Epic 2014 EMR and more than 750 other applications. Additional benefits from the VDI solution for its Epic EMR upgrade include:
"It's very important that our physicians and other care providers have information at their fingertips at all points of care—whether that's at the patient's bedside or in the operating room. With our investment in Citrix XenDesktop on a VCE Vblock System we were able to easily deploy a cost effective end-user computing environment that provides our clinicians and staff access to billing records, medical records, diagnostic information, and medical imaging," said Dee Emon, Vice President and Chief Information Officer and formerly Chief Clinical Information Officer at WFBMC.
To further simplify converged VDI solutions, VCE offers a deep, growing portfolio of VCE End-User Computing Services including assessment through planning, design and integration. VCE's strong relationships with VMware and Citrix have resulted in VDI Integration Services, which install and test VMware Horizon View or Citrix XenDesktop software on VCE infrastructure during the manufacturing process to accelerate VDI deployment.
"Many organizations are eager to take advantage of the inherent benefits of VDI deployments but historically the complexity and costs associated have hindered adoption. VCE converged solutions remove the complex challenges and costs associated with realizing these benefits so organizations can make this a reality. Our preconfigured solutions are designed to support production-ready VDI right out of the gate and enable IT to rapidly provision network, compute or storage assets to meet the demands of the organization," said VCE's Todd Pavone, Executive Vice President, Product Strategy and Development.
