Vasectomy Reversal Doctor Performs Over 3000 Low-Cost Reverse Vasectomies Since 2005
FORT GIBSON, Okla., April 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- In October of 2005, Dr. David S. Wilson started performing low-cost vasectomy reversals for those who could not otherwise afford them. Fast forward to today, and as of April 1st, 2013 - his practice has performed more than 3000 of these life-giving medical procedures. Dr. Wilson said in a recent interview. "I hear people every day, week end and week out, who regret their vasectomy. About once every week or two, someone tells me that they couldn't afford the procedure any other way." He also said, "Most people who come to us could afford to pay more, with careful planning, but that is why we are here so that basically anyone who needs it can get one."
According to Dr. Wilson, there are excellent odds that someone who is less than nine years out from having a vasectomy will see the return of live sperm, which is necessary for achieving pregnancy. He explained that for those who seek this procedure less than three years after the original vasectomy have a 98% chance for return of live sperm after the reversal procedure and an 83% pregnancy rate when there are no female issues. Along with that, there is a 91% chance for those who are less than six years out and a pregnancy rate of 74% with no female issues, and 84% chance for those who had their vasectomy seven to eight years previously and pregnancy rate of 60% with no female issues.
The non-invasive procedure that is performed in Dr. Wilson's clinic, known as Vasovasostomy, is performed with a powerful operating microscope (microsurgery) and typically takes between one and one half to two hours to complete. Only an occasional case will take longer than that. All of this, along with addressing the issue of pain, is discussed with patients during their initial consultation. Local anesthetic is used at the beginning of the surgery where only a few pinches or pricks are felt. After that, the Dr. says that most patients snooze a bit during the procedure.
When Dr. Wilson first approached this area of practice, it was not his intention to specialize in microsurgery because he thought he could do a good job without it. However, he soon realized that with the small diameter of the vas lumen (0.4 millimeters) the microscope provided much better visualization.
"We have been very efficient with our approach without a lot of frills and this gives excellent odds for folks who are less than nine years out - at a fee that is reachable for everyone without compromising quality using a standardized simple procedure," says Dr. Wilson. "Of course, we do this for those that are more than nine years out, but the best results are seen with those less than nine years from their vasectomy."
In Dr. Wilson's opinion, it is better not to get a vasectomy in the first place, but since many men choose that as an alternative birth control method, he and his practice is there to help when they decide to have another child. Just looking at the gallery of baby photos on his website is proof that he has been very successful in doing that.
