Varian Selected to Provide Proton System and Software for Oncology Hospital in South China

PALO ALTO, Calif. and GUANGZHOU, China, Oct. 25, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) today announced it has been selected to install a ProBeam® four-room proton therapy system in the new Guangzhou Concord Cancer Hospital. Varian will also provide its Eclipse™ treatment planning and ARIA® oncology information management software for the hospital, in addition to a 10-year service agreement. Varian booked the order in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2017.

Guangzhou Concord Cancer Hospital, a subsidiary of Concord Medical Services Holdings Limited, began construction in February 2017, and is scheduled to begin operation in late 2019. When completed, the hospital will be one of the most advanced oncology centers equipped with a proton therapy system in Guangdong province, China. It will feature four proton therapy treatment rooms with full 360 degree rotational gantries.

Varian's ProBeam system is the first to offer fully-integrated intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) to enable more efficient adaptive proton therapy. Varian's pencil-beam scanning technology gives clinicians the ability to deliver the dose precisely within the contours of the tumor to minimize dose to healthy tissue. When combined with integrated cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), the ProBeam system enables advanced adaptive therapy during the course of treatment helping to make it a more precise form of proton therapy.
