Varian and Danish Center for Particle Therapy Announce Grand Opening and First Patient Treatments
PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- In a ceremony officiated by the Regional Council of Central Denmark Region, Anders Kühnau, and attended by both the Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, and the Chairman of the A.P. Møller Foundation, Ane Maersk Mc-Kinney Uggla, the Varian-equipped Danish Center for Particle Therapy (DCPT) officially opened today, at the Aarhus University Hospital in Aarhus, Denmark. The three-treatment-room facility features the Varian ProBeam® proton therapy system and has already begun patient treatments.
"We are very pleased with our partnership with Varian on the installation and implementation of the ProBeam system and the ARIA® oncology information management and Eclipse™ treatment planning software," said Professor Morten Høyer, medical director at DCPT. "Since treating our first patient for a brain tumor, we were quickly able to begin treatments for five other brain tumor patients. We have used all the relevant capabilities of the system from the first day of operation, including multi-field optimization, robust optimization and cone-beam imaging. In April, our second treatment room will be operational, and the extra capacity will allow for treatment of other diagnoses like head and neck cancer, pediatric cancers and breast cancer."
"Varian and DCPT worked very closely on the development and installation of the ProBeam system at the center and we are proud to see patients now receiving much needed treatments," said Kolleen Kennedy, chief growth officer and president, Proton Solutions at Varian. "The opening of DCPT is another important step in the growing global availability of this advanced treatment technology and moves us closer to achieving our vision of a world without fear of cancer."
Varian's ProBeam system offers fully-integrated intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) to enable more efficient adaptive proton therapy. Varian's pencil-beam scanning technology gives clinicians the ability to deliver the dose precisely within the contours of the tumor to minimize dose to healthy tissue. In Europe, ProBeam systems are already in clinical use in Germany, Switzerland, Russia, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.
ARIA is a comprehensive electronic medical record and image management system that aggregates patient data into an organized, oncology-specific medical chart with functional components for managing clinical, administrative and financial operations for medical, radiation and surgical oncology. The ARIA system provides a seamless flow of information for managing the patient's entire journey—from diagnosis through follow-up.
Eclipse treatment planning software creates an optimized treatment plan based on a physician's dose instructions, and information about the size, shape, and location of the tumor to be treated with proton therapy.
