Georgia is the first U.S. state where VarageSale will be launching statewide. The newly launched communities serve the following areas: all ITP Atlanta, Savannah, Cobb County and surrounding areas, Gwinnett County and surrounding counties, Macon-Warner Robins, Bulloch-Effingham Counties, Athens Metro, Bartow-Floyd-Gordon Counties, Albany Metro and La Grange-Troup County.
VarageSale was founded by former elementary school teacher Tami Zuckerman, so the company makes supporting education and families a priority. To celebrate its grand opening in Georgia, VarageSale is partnering with the Georgia Parent Teacher Association with the goal of raising up to $400,000 to fund PTAs at local schools.
"As a mom, I founded VarageSale because I wanted to stretch the family budget by buying affordable items and selling unwanted possessions with neighbors," said Zuckerman. "As a former teacher, I'm excited to help support local classrooms in Georgia and allow our members to help kids in their communities simply by using VarageSale to buy and sell items locally."
Here's how it works: First, Georgians who are new to VarageSale can visit pta.varagesale.com to find their school's code. They can then download the app or visit www.varagesale.com to join their local community. Once they post their first item for sale and include their school's code in the item description, VarageSale will donate $10 to their local PTA. More information can be found at pta.varagesale.com.
"We're thrilled to partner with VarageSale to help make every child's potential become a reality," said Lisa-Marie Haygood, President of Georgia PTA. "It's exciting to work alongside such a family-friendly app that aligns so well with our own values."
To mark the Georgia launch, VarageSale also surveyed 500 local parents in the state and found some interesting data about their shopping and spending habits:
- Most Georgia parents have no problem buying secondhand items to save money.
- Their kids can't tell the difference between old and new toys anyway: 62% believe their children can't tell the difference between secondhand toys and new ones
- Spending and clutter are hurting Georgia parents' love lives:
- Clutter kills the mood: 77% think household clutter kills the mood more than a lack of sleep
- Money spent on toys causes fights: 26% have had disagreements over how much money they're spending on their kids' toys
- Georgia parents are "toying" with their kids:
- Most toys don't get played with: On average, Georgia kids from kindergarten to 8th grade only play with 36% of their toys on a regular basis
- So parents are secretly regifting them: More than half (53%) of Georgia parents have re-gifted one of their children's toys
- And telling white lies to cover it up: Nearly 2 in 5 (39%) frequently tell a "white lie" to their children to cover up throwing away an old toy or clothing item
