SAO PAULO, Dec. 23, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Brazilian-based digital payments company UOL BoaCompra, and VALVE Corporation, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2) and the largest online game distribution platform, Steam, today announced that UOL BoaCompra will support local currencies and payment options available on Steam in both Colombia and Peru.
Since 2012, VALVE has been using UOL BoaCompra to allow gamers in Brazil to choose their preferred payment methods in Steam. The successful cooperation expanded to Mexico and Turkey last year, and is now extended to two of the most rapidly expanding online game markets in Latin America: Colombia and Peru.
"Based on our successful track record with Brazil, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Turkey, BoaCompra was the natural choice for opening up local currencies and payments in Colombia and Peru," said Mark Richardson, CFO at VALVE.
A staggering 90 percent of those online in Colombia and Peru do not have access to international credit cards to make purchases online, as these markets are still cash-based countries. UOL BoaCompra's portfolio of local payment options in these markets offers full payment coverage, including Efecty, PayVálidda, Baloto, PSE and Safetypay in Colombia, and PagoEfectivo, BCP, BBVA Continental, PayVálidda and Safetypay in Peru.
"We are delighted to once more launch several local payment options in Latin America with Valve, and we are looking forward to helping VALVE expand into these territories even further by enabling Steam to bring online games to more users," said Fernando Estevez Vazquez, Director of Global Payments and Strategy at UOL BoaCompra.
As announced last month, Steam began supporting local currencies in Colombia and Peru, Colombian Peso (COP) and Peruvian Nuevo Sol (PEN), as part of a greater development to roll out more than a dozen new currencies with supporting payment methods through the beginning of next year, making purchases on the platform more accessible to Steam users world-wide.
