The proclamation states:
Whereas Advocates for Individuals with Disabilities and AID.org Foundation bring awareness of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) through education, compliance and generous giving;
Whereas nearly 1 in 5 people have a disability in the U.S., making up the largest minority group in the country;
Whereas 28 percent of those with disabilities fall below the poverty line. Adults ages 21 to 64 with disabilities had median monthly earnings that are $763 less compared to those with no disability;
Whereas of today's 20 year-olds, just over 1 in 4 will become disabled before they retire;
Whereas AID.org has discovered approximately 95% of businesses in the Valley are not in compliance with ADA regulations which have been in effect for a quarter of a century;
Whereas thousands of individuals with disabilities cannot get insurance companies to properly cover medical expenses;
Whereas local, regional, state and federal agencies, along with businesses and the private sector are working with AID.org to improve the quality of life of persons living with a disability;
Whereas increased education, kindness and wide-spread, complete compliance with ADA requirements is necessary to end discrimination against individuals with disabilities.
Those with disabilities that would like to request assistance can apply online at www.aid.org. To schedule interviews please email.
