BOSTON, Oct. 18, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Validic, the leading platform for patient-generated health data integration and analysis, has been awarded a patent for its Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology within Validic VitalSnap®, the company announced today at the Connected Health Conference. This comes at a time when the industry is experiencing a proliferation of home health technologies, coupled with new financial models and reimbursements which are powering the development of data-driven care.
Introduced in January 2016, Validic VitalSnap is a mobile technology that enables users to easily capture and record health data from their legacy, in-home medical devices via their smartphone's camera. Because many home health devices are still not wirelessly connected, data within the device is often inaccessible. This patent recognizes the VitalSnap method for optical character recognition of external segmented displays using a smartphone camera. The technology and underlying algorithm enables VitalSnap to read a device screen and digitize the data in real time. The information can then be recorded within an application and transmitted to a providers' electronic health record (EHR) or patient portal.
Beyond optical character recognition, there are many opportunities to make patient-generated health data (PGHD) actionable within the clinical workflow and provide clinicians with the insights they need – at the point of care – to make effective treatment decisions. To continue advancing industry capabilities, Validic's data science team has been developing a proprietary exploration engine to discover additional value from de-identified data sets.
The first of these data science initiatives to be released is the Validic Statistics Engine. The Statistics Engine enables organizations to easily derive individual or population-level trends and anomalies from PGHD. By pulling the analyses directly from a statistics API, clients can build deeper insights into their apps or programs – powering personalized interventions and user analysis. Whereas other statistics engines update their statistics on an hourly or daily basis, Validic updates are made in seconds – or near real time. This allows Validic's engine to quickly and efficiently scale to a higher volume of data.
The Validic Statistics Engine provides average values as a baseline for personalized goals and standard deviation values as a means to trigger alerts and notifications. For example, the statistics engine can conduct a macronutrient analysis of Christina's diet – correlated with blood glucose, weight, sleep, activity, caloric intake and burn – to serve as the basis for personalized nutrition and meal recommendations. Christina, who has type II diabetes, has struggled with keeping her blood glucose values in range. The personalized recommendations help create realistic targets for her nutrition; however, she has a considerable number of out-of-range readings over the next week. Her care manager, Jason, receives a notification regarding the outliers and reaches out to engage Christina. After that conversation and consulting with Christina's physician, they adjust the insulin dosage and treatment plan accordingly – preventing a hypoglycemic reaction.
"Validic's placement in the industry has allowed us to capture the market on patient-generated health data. Our solutions enable access, integration, standardization, and now analysis of these data," said Drew Schiller, CEO at Validic. "Patient-generated health data offer untold potential for care delivery and condition management. As the prevalence of chronic conditions continues to rise, quality of life, workforce productivity, and lifestyle choices suffer. We need to leverage existing technology and data being created in our daily lives to drive more personalized and proactive interventions."
As new technologies continue to develop in sophistication and proliferation, it is crucial that we as an industry build tools that enable better connection between systems, and access and delivery of information between patients and their healthcare providers.
Validic's data science team is currently deepening the opportunities for various applications of machine learning to patient-generated health data.
