UV Disinfection Robot TRU-D Kills Superbugs at Chandler Regional Medical Center
Dignity Health Member Hospital is first in Arizona to deploy the germ-zapping technology from Lumalier
CHANDLER, Ariz., Oct. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Chandler Regional Medical Center, a Dignity Health Member, is the latest hospital to deploy TRU-D SmartUVC, a 5-foot-5 germ-killing UV disinfection robot made by Lumalier – the recognized leader in advanced UV disinfection products used across many industries, including health care.
Short for Total Room Ultraviolet Disinfection, TRU-D is being deployed in hospitals across the U.S. and Canada to combat "superbug" pathogens and enhance patient outcomes. Chandler Regional is the first hospital in the state of Arizona to deploy the innovative UV technology.
TRU-D works by generating UV light energy that modifies the DNA structure of an infectious cell, and it is the only portable UV disinfection system on the market with Sensor360™ technology, which calculates the time needed to react to room variables – such as size, geometry, surface reflectivity and the amount and location of equipment in the room – and effectively deliver a lethal dose during a single cycle from a single, central location in the room.
"TRU-D offers an abundance of health benefits," said Kay Tracy, director of quality management at Chandler Regional. "Chandler Regional is committed to providing the highest quality medical care, and we are pleased to offer this innovative solution as one of the many ways in which we bolster the well-being and safety of our staff and patients."
TRU-D allows hospitals to confidently clean and disinfect their patient environments, killing pathogens such as Clostridium difficile (C. diff.), Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE).
"TRU-D SmartUVC can achieve 99.99 percent disinfection of all virus and bacteria," said Chuck Dunn, president of TRU-D LLC. "It is breakthrough technology that will revolutionize the cleaning and disinfection of health care environments, taking the guesswork out of previous protocols and ensuring confidence in clinicians and patients alike."
After a hospital staff member cleans the room using traditional methods, TRU-D is rolled into the room to "finish the job." Set-up for TRU-D is quick and easy and does not require input of room measurements or covering of windows and vents. The system can disinfect an entire room – including shadowed spaces – from one location, eliminating the need to move it to multiple places in the room. Its patented Sensor360™ technology analyzes the unique variables of the room and floods the space (both line-of-site and shadowed spaces) with the proper dose of UV light energy. TRU-D spends whatever time is necessary to confidently eliminate infectious germs from contaminated surfaces before shutting down and audibly notifying the operator that disinfection is complete.
TRU-D SmartUVC is the device of choice for nearly all of the existing independent research on UV disinfection technology. More than 100 TRU-Ds have been deployed to disinfect hospitals across the U.S., Canada and Europe, including the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., Anne Arundel Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Pa., and Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia.
