GREGORY, Texas, Feb. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Members of the United Steelworkers (USW) Local 235A in Gregory, Texas, will welcome a delegation of allies from several international unions this week for a series of solidarity events throughout the Corpus Christi and Houston areas.
The international visitors from industrial unions in Great Britain, South Africa and Australia will join USW members on the picket line in Gregory, as well as for a road trip to the Houston offices of Glencore, Sherwin's multi-billion-dollar corporate parent. There, the delegation will present Glencore with a "silver medal" in recognition of the company's second-place finish in voting for the Public Eye "Worst Company" Award.
Glencore, the 10th-largest company in the world with net income of $4.6 billion in 2013, finished in front of Wal-Mart and behind only Chevron in the voting. Besides its illegal lockout in Gregory, allegations of firings, anti-union intimidation and tax evasion have followed Glencore to work sites all over the world, from the United States to Australia and South Africa.
MEDIA OPPORTUNITIES:
- On Wednesday, Feb. 25, members of the international delegation will join USW Local 235A members on the picket line in Gregory from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will be available for media interviews with members of the local media that afternoon. (In the event of heavy rain, the event may be moved to the union hall at 2301 Saratoga Boulevard, Corpus Christi.)
- On Thursday, Feb. 26, the delegation will travel with USW Local 235A members for a rally from noon to 1 p.m. outside the Glencore offices at 4265 San Felipe Street, Houston. The group will then join USW members on picket lines at oil refineries in Houston, Deer Park and Texas City.
