INDEPENDENCE, Mo., Aug. 21, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The United Steelworkers (USW) today announced its endorsement for Cort VanOstran to represent working families in Missouri's second congressional district on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.
USW District 11 Director Emil Ramirez said that the union is proud to endorse a candidate who will stand with workers on important issues.
"We need powerful new voices in Washington to protect our right to join together and bargain fair wages, better benefits and safer working conditions," Ramirez said. "We know that we can count on Cort VanOstran to stand with us."
Ramirez said that Missourians have an opportunity to vote for a candidate who understands the value of organized labor.
"Missouri voters know that strong unions will rebuild the American middle class, soundly defeating anti-union, anti-worker Proposition A at the ballot box earlier this month," he said. "Those same voters now can choose to elect a congressman who will fight for them instead of the wealthiest individuals and most powerful corporations."
In endorsing VanOstran, the USW joins the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; the United Automobile, Aerospace, and Agricultural Implement of Workers of America; and the St. Louis-Kansas City Carpenters Regional Council.
The USW represents 850,000 men and women employed in manufacturing, metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in public sector and service occupations.
