PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., Oct. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Inclement weather from Hurricane Sandy made for challenging play in the USTA National Women's 50 Clay Court Championships at BallenIsles state-of-the-art Sports Complex from October 24 – 28, 2012.

"It's an honor to be again selected by the USTA as host Club for this terrific Championship on our world class stadium facility," BallenIsles General Manager Derrick Barnett said.
"To make up for a day lost to weather, the finals format was shortened to a match tiebreak instead of a full third set," Tournament Director and BallenIsles Tennis Director, Trish Faulkner said.
In the singles semi-finals #1 seed Fran Chandler took on #4 seed Judy Newman and #2 seed Vicki Buholz faced off against # 5 seed Sue Bartlett. Both matches went easily to Chandler 6-1,6-1 and Bartlett 6-1,6-2.
Closely contested finals saw Bartlett taking the first set 6-2 with deep slower balls high over the net to force Chandler back and into some errors. Chandler came back to take the second 6-3. In the match tiebreak using deep ground strokes to force errors off Chandler, Bartlett won 10-3 taking the Gold Ball and national title, leaving Chandler with the Silver.
The third place playoff went to Buholz who easily won the first set against Newman 6-2 and after a closely fought second set, Buholz took the Bronze Ball with a 7-5 second set win.
After a short rest, the doubles semi-finals got under way with Buholz and Vick prevailing over Bartlett and her partner Sue Webb, advancing to the finals against Hollman and Josephs who took out Chandler and Loomis-Landauer in straight sets.
In the ¾ playoff, the Bronze ball went to Chandler and Loomis-Landauer 6-3,6-0. And the final match of a very long day went to Buholz and Vick, 3-6, 6-3,10-07, who won the Gold Ball with Hollman and Josephs taking the Silver.
