HOUSTON, Aug. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- CEMEX, a global building materials company, today announced the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) identified CEMEX's Balcones Quarry in New Braunfels, Texas, and FEC Quarry in Miami, Fla., as two of the top crushed stone production operations in the United States, further demonstrating the company's leadership position in aggregate production.
The USGS also ranks CEMEX sixth overall in the United States as a company for crushed stone production volume.
"Aggregates are an integral part of the construction process and betterment of our communities," said CEMEX USA President Ignacio Madridejos. "CEMEX is proud to provide these much-needed building blocks to create new state-of-the-art buildings as well as being a trusted source to advance the growth of the nation's infrastructure."
USGS statistics rank CEMEX's Balcones Quarry first in the nation in terms of crushed stone production based on the latest volume figures from 2016. Balcones Quarry had previously captured the same top spot using 2015 volumes.
Balcones Quarry annually processes more than 10 million tons of limestone to provide construction projects for projects across Texas. CEMEX recently completed a Wildlife Habitat and Education Center on the grounds of the operation that includes 17 acres of restored prairie, pollinator gardens and meadows with native plants to promote conservation and sustainability. A water recycling facility was recently commissioned at the quarry that can reduce annual water consumption by nearly 90 percent.
The Balcones Quarry was awarded the National Stone, Sand and Gravel Association (NSSGA) Gold Environmental Excellence Award in 2014 followed by the Excellence in Community Relations Award in 2015.
CEMEX's FEC Quarry moved up a spot in the USGS rankings, jumping to third on the list for crushed stone production operations processing more than 8 million tons annually. The award-winning quarry was previously fourth on the USGS list and provides critical aggregates for new buildings and infrastructure projects across Florida.
FEC Quarry, established in 1974, produces seven different nominal sizes of aggregate and five different types of manufactured screenings, and its link to rail lines enable CEMEX to quickly distribute product.
The facility received the National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association (NSSGA) Environmental Excellence Gold Award in 2017, and earlier this year, FEC earned the 2018 NSSGA Platinum Award for Community Relations.
