CHICAGO, March 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Rico Roman is a U.S. Army veteran, Purple Heart recipient, and a loving husband and father whose family will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see him compete for gold at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

USG Corporation (NYSE: USG) and its national building products distribution subsidiary L&W Supply, a sponsor of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams and the Canadian Olympic Team, raised funds to send Roman's wife and two children, ages 9 and 11, to Sochi to see him compete. L&W Supply matched every dollar donated by employees, customers, vendors and the public.
"Our U.S. Olympic and Paralympic partnership and this fundraising campaign bring the USG brand to life in a way that connects and engages all of us," said USG Chairman, President and CEO James S. Metcalf. "Rico's story and the spirit of the Olympic and Paralympic Games capture the very essence of our new brand, and we are proud to be part of the team behind the team that helps make this experience possible."
In 2007, on his third tour of duty in Iraq, Roman's vehicle struck a roadside bomb, and the injuries he sustained led to the amputation of his left leg above the knee. He demonstrated remarkable strength, courage and perseverance in overcoming hardship to achieve success, and his story resonates with employees at USG and L&W Supply.
Roman was introduced to sled hockey through Operation Comfort, a nonprofit organization that provides rehabilitative therapeutic programs for injured veterans as they recover at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. After covering travel expenses for the Roman family, USG and L&W Supply will donate leftover dollars from the fundraising effort to Operation Comfort.
L&W Supply vendors donating to the fundraising campaign include Clark Dietrich, Cemco, PrimeSource, Grabber and Owens Corning.
USG also donated building materials to help construct USA House in Sochi, Russia and is supplying expertise and materials to aid in the improvements at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
