LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- The United States Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) today named USC Marshall School of Business Associate Professor of Clinical Entrepreneurship Elissa Grossman as its 2019 Entrepreneurship Educator of the Year. According to USASBE, the award "is given to an individual who has provided distinguished leadership over a number of years within the field of entrepreneurship education."
Grossman's experience in industry, supporting entrepreneurs, and as an entrepreneurship educator includes prior recognition – at the school and national level – for research and teaching. Her classes—student favorites—employ novel pedagogical methods such as custom-built serious games to convey and help students internalize entrepreneurial concepts. A long-time proponent of experiential education, Dr. Grossman brings the real world into her classes as much as possible – partnering with founders to build activities through which students can tackle current business problems, crafting cases that showcase founder challenges for students to consider, and helping students launch and run businesses on campus (including, recently, four food trucks).
"USASBE's annual conference was the first I ever attended, when still a doctoral candidate," said Grossman. "I've met so many amazing educators over the years through the organization – and have long been thrilled to just be in their company. To now be honored by them is really special. Thank you to USASBE and to my peers in entrepreneurship education for the focus you put on helping the next generation of business leaders."
This is the third win for a USC Marshall professor, following Professor Emerita Kathleen Allen in 2014 and Professor Jill Kickul in 2017.
"Three wins for this award is exceptional, highlighting USC Marshall's enduring position as a trailblazer in entrepreneurship education," said Helena Yli-Renko, Director of USC Marshall's Lloyd Greif Center for Entrepreneurial Studies. "Elissa is a leader both in and out of the classroom here at Marshall and in the academic field of entrepreneurship. Her recognition from USASBE further validates not only her own commitment to the study and improvement of entrepreneurial practices, but also Marshall's overall commitment and excellence in the discipline."
USASBE presented the award to Grossman at its annual conference, USASBE 2019, held this year in St. Pete Beach, FL.
