Reviews and Snapshots now available
MCLEAN, Va., March 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- USA TODAY announced the release of two new APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) today at South by Southwest Interactive in Austin, Texas. USA TODAY is being featured in the Circus Mashimus Lounge, a favorite for Software Developers at the event, which is run by Mashery (www.mashery.com), the leader of Application Programming Interface (API) management services, with 95,000 registered developers. Mashery provides the infrastructure and management for USA TODAY's API network portal.
The USA TODAY Developer Network, found at developer.usatoday.com, provides USA TODAY APIs and a community for developers to discover content and build new applications for the web and digital platforms.
The new APIs are:
- The USA TODAY Reviews API allows developers to construct customized feeds going back to 2004 of USA TODAY's music, movie and book reviews.
- The USA TODAY Snapshots API allows developers access to a customized Snapshots feed. USA TODAY Snapshots are easy-to-read statistical graphics that present information on various issues and trends in a visually appealing way.
"We've been pleased with the response to the launch of our developer network and we're excited about these new additions. The APIs are an excellent tool to share USA TODAY's exclusive content with new audiences," said Steve Kurtz, vice president of digital development for USA TODAY.
"The Snapshots API introduces a truly unique asset into the API ecosystem. Since partnering with USA TODAY a year ago, we've been eager to see such a globally recognizable piece of content - so closely identified with USA TODAY - released to developers. We're excited to see what the creativity of the developer community will do with this unique asset and how its availability will extend the reach of the USA TODAY brand to so many new users around the world," from Oren Michels, CEO of Mashery.
In addition to the newly released API, USA TODAY has three other APIs currently available on the USA TODAY Developer Portal. The USA TODAY Articles API allows any developer to construct their own custom feeds for USA TODAY stories going back to 2004. A subsection of the Articles API, the Mobile Articles API, allows users to return articles in USA TODAY's mobile format. The USA TODAY Best-Selling Books API allows developers to retrieve information about USA TODAY's Best-Selling Books list, as well as list history and other metadata for individual books. The Professional Sports Salaries API offers detailed data from USA TODAY's sports salaries database dating back more than 20 years, and includes MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL.
