NFL Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (Escambia HS, Pensacola, FL), Thurman Thomas (Willowridge HS, Houston, TX) and Rod Woodson (R. Nelson Snider HS, Fort Wayne, IN) lead list of 24 top players in 30-year history of most prestigious honor in high school sports
MCLEAN, Va., Jan. 15, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Collectively, they've combined for more than 100 NFL Pro Bowl selections, nine Super Bowl rings and three enshrinements in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Before any of those honors, however, they were first selected to the American Family Insurance ALL-USA Football team, which this year celebrates its 30th anniversary as the most prestigious honor in high school football. To commemorate that milestone, USA TODAY High School Sports—the nation's leading source for high school sports news and information—today unveiled its 30th anniversary American Family Insurance ALL-USA Team, highlighting the top 24 players selected to the ALL-USA team since its inception in 1982.
The American Family Insurance ALL-USA 30th Anniversary Team is featured in today's print edition of USA TODAY Sports, and is also available online at www.usatodayhss.com.
Leading the list are three former ALL-USA selections that have since gone on to enshrinement in the Pro Football Hall of Fame—running backs Emmitt Smith (Escambia HS, Pensacola, Fla., 1986) and Thurman Thomas (Willowridge HS, Houston, Texas, 1983) and defensive back Rod Woodson (R. Nelson Snider HS, Fort Wayne, Ind., 1982).
Smith went on to become the NFL's all-time leading rusher with the Dallas Cowboys and Arizona Cardinals, winning three Super Bowls during his 15-year career. Thomas, the only player ever to lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage for four straight seasons, led the Buffalo Bills to four straight Super Bowls and earned the NFL's MVP award in 1991.Woodson played 15 seasons, setting the NFL record for interceptions returned for a touchdown (12) and helping to lead the Baltimore Ravens to their first Super Bowl win in 2000.
They are joined by 21 other standouts who parlayed their high school success into successful collegiate and professional careers, including nine players still currently active in the NFL—RB Adrian Peterson (Palestine HS, Texas, 2003); OL Leonard Davis (Wortham HS, Texas, 1996); TE Aaron Hernandez (Central HS, Bristol, Conn., 2006); WR Randy Moss (DuPont HS, Belle, W. Va., 1994); WR A.J. Green (Summerville HS, S.C., 2006); K Sebastian Janikowski (Seabreeze HS, Daytona Beach, Fla., 1996); DL Haloti Ngata (Highland HS, Salt Lake City, 2001); LB LaMarr Woodley (Sagniaw HS, Michigan, 2002); and DB Antonio Cromartie (Lincoln HS, Tallahassee, Fla., 2002).
Following is the complete listing of the American Family Insurance ALL-USA 30th Anniversary Team, as determined by USA TODAY High School Sports. For more information on the 30th Anniversary ALL-USA Team, visit www.usatodayhss.com.
