SPRING, Texas, Dec. 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- The Global Prebiotic Association (GPA) has announced prebiotic market sizing data from its collaborative effort with Nutrition Business Journal and the NEXT Trends Database, which has determined that the US prebiotic-only supplement market is estimated to reach nearly $400 million by 2020. The data from New Hope's NEXT Trends database indicated that the growth in number of prebiotics products introduced at Natural Products Expo West grew 118% from 2016 to 2018. GPA also released its own consumer research that found 23% of supplement users take prebiotics, but only 7% take them regularly, which trails larger and more familiar categories, and reinforces that the category is ripe for growth.
"Prebiotics play an important role in the human microbiome, feeding it and initiating many pathways including by directly feeding probiotics. They support a holistic approach to wellness in food and supplement form, by shifting microbial and metabolic signatures and are emerging as key players in areas such as digestive health, immune support and mood," said GPA Executive Director Len Monheit. "This data does two things – it shows the huge potential that exists and supports the need for more awareness and understanding. GPA is actively working to communicate the right definition of prebiotics, in a way that is supported by the science, easy for consumers to understand, and encompasses emerging work relating to the microbiome and how it operates."
Just a few weeks ago at the SupplySide West show in Las Vegas, a panel of top experts joined GPA Executive Director Len Monheit and Informa's Karen Butler for a Market Opportunities for Prebiotics Workshop. David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.S.N., David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA shared his view of microbiome science. Robert Hutkins, Ph.D., from the University of Nebraska took attendees through the various definitions of prebiotics and reminded everyone that there is still work to be done in this area, but the ISAPP definition is the closest to an industry-accepted definition. Dietitian and GPA Nutrition Advisor and Media Representative Kara Landau shared insight into current CPGs that incorporate prebiotics and where there's opportunity for product development. Amin Talati Upadhye attorney Ivan Wasserman provided a regulatory update.
