CLEVELAND, April 3, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Total post-consumer metal recovered in the US is forecast to reach 9.1 million tons in 2021, according to Recovered Metals: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. The volume of recovered steel and other ferrous metals is expected to continue to outpace other metals as pervasive landfill bans and recycling programs for durable goods such as appliances and electronics will continue to foster recovery of steel from municipal solid waste (MSW).
The volume of durable goods generated in MSW is projected to rise over the forecast period, as increasing consumer spending leads to replacement of older appliances. Furthermore, rising demand for new appliances will support recovery efforts, as recovered ferrous metal is often incorporated into new durable goods.
This report forecasts the total recovery of post-consumer metal from the US MSW stream in short tons to 2021. For comparison, this report also forecasts to 2021 the total generation of post-consumer metal in short tons. Total MSW metal recovery and generation are segmented by material as follows:
- steel and other ferrous
- lead
- aluminum
- other nonferrous (generation only).
To illustrate historical trends, total metal generated and recovered are provided in annual series from 2006 to 2016.
