Using the exclusive U.S. News Mutual Fund Score, a list of the best long-term performers in some of the most popular mutual fund categories has been compiled. Over the past 12 months, every fund has received an average U.S. News Mutual Fund Score of seven or higher. The score is based on the ratings of some of the mutual fund industry's best-known analysts, including Morningstar, Lipper, Standard & Poor's, TheStreet, and Zacks.
To gauge performance, the database was screened to find funds with the highest 10-year trailing returns as of the end of March. Each fund on the list finished in the top quartile of its respective Morningstar category, with the exception of a few index funds, which have been included as options for investors who favor a passive approach.
Since high expenses can eat away at long-term returns, funds were also screened for fees. All of the funds on this year's list charge annual fees that are less than their respective category average. For the sake of affordability, funds have minimum investments of $25,000 or less.
Top-rated funds include TCW Total Return Bond (symbol TGLMX), Vanguard Wellesley Income (VWINX), Meridian Growth (MERDX), Permanent Portfolio (PRPFX), and Homestead Small Company Stock (HSCSX). The list includes 26 categories, ranging from emerging markets stocks to intermediate-term bond funds.
The U.S. News mutual fund portal, a one-stop site for following top funds, makes analyzing these investments a simpler and more informed experience. USNews.com visitors can browse easy-to-understand reviews, information, and assigned scores for over 4,500 distinct mutual funds.
"In today's market, picking the right investment is more complex than ever," said U.S. News Editor Brian Kelly. "Our goal is to make it easier for everyday investors to make smart choices."
