U.S. News Media Group Ranks Texas Children's Hospital Among Leading Pediatric Institutions Nationwide
One of only eight children's hospitals to earn "Honor Roll" distinction
HOUSTON, June 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Texas Children's Hospital has been named as a leader among national pediatric hospitals in U.S. News & World Report's 2010 edition of America's Best Children's Hospitals. One of only eight hospitals in the nation to achieve the Honor Roll designation, Texas Children's is the only hospital in Texas – and the entire southern region of the U.S. – awarded this distinction. For more information, see www.texaschildrens.org.
The comprehensive survey ranks children's hospitals across 10 major subspecialties. For the second consecutive year, Texas Children's was ranked in the top ten for nine out of 10 categories, and also earned Honor Roll status by being named as a best hospital in all of the 10 subspecialties surveyed.
Texas Children's earned Honor Roll distinction by being ranked among America's best in:
- #3 Heart & Heart Surgery
- #4 Gastroenterology
- #4 Kidney
- #4 Neurology & Neurosurgery
- #4 Pulmonology
- #5 Cancer
- #7 Neonatology
- #9 Urology
- #10 Diabetes & Endocrinology
- #12 Orthopedics
As part of the new ranking system that U.S. News began in 2009, pediatric hospitals are ranked across 10 major subspecialties, as opposed to being ranked overall. The Honor Roll designation is reserved for those hospitals that ranked in all 10 subspecialties surveyed.
"We are excited that U.S. News has again acknowledged Texas Children's as one of the nation's premier pediatric hospitals," said President and CEO Mark A. Wallace. "Texas Children's ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality patient care, education and research has positioned us as one of the foremost institutions for treating childhood diseases and disorders."
The rankings are a result of a methodology that weighed a combination of reputation, outcome and care-related measures such as nursing care, advanced technology and credentialing, among other factors. The hospitals were judged based on a combination of opinions from pediatric specialists about the hospitals they would recommend for the sickest children and data gathered in an extensive survey of the hospitals themselves.
"To consistently be distinguished as one of the best pediatric hospitals in the nation is a tremendous honor," said Dr. Mark Kline, physician-in-chief of Texas Children's Hospital and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine. "This recognition is truly a testament to the extraordinary work of dedicated physicians, researchers, clinicians and employees driven to achieve excellence year after year."
