U.S. News & World Report Names University Hospitals Case Medical Center to the Best Hospitals 2013-14 Honor Roll
Named to Prestigious Lists in all 12 Methodology-Ranked Specialties
CLEVELAND, July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- University Hospitals (UH) Case Medical Center is one of only 18 hospitals in the country to have been named to U.S. News & World Report's most exclusive rankings list: the Best Hospitals 2013-14 Honor Roll.
The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 24th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most complex cases. This year's Honor Roll highlights the top 18 hospitals, out of nearly 5,000 nationwide, for their rare breadth and depth of clinical excellence.
Additionally, UH Case Medical Center ranked in all 12 methodology-ranked specialties and in the Top 20 in six specialties - Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Ear, Nose & Throat, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Orthopaedics and Urology.
"We are extremely proud that University Hospitals Case Medical Center has been named as one of the top 20 hospitals in the country," says Fred C. Rothstein, MD, President, UH Case Medical Center. "This honor is a reflection of our commitment to exceptional patient care, academic leadership and renowned clinical research."
Overall, UH Case Medical Center improved in 11 different specialties and had the best rankings in its history in seven specialties. UH Case Medical Center is nationally ranked in:
-- Cancer (#15)
-- Cardiology & Heart Surgery (#19)
-- Diabetes & Endocrinology (#26)
-- Ear, Nose & Throat (#18)
-- Gastroenterology & GI Surgery (#13)
-- Geriatrics (#21)
-- Gynecology (#24)
-- Nephrology (#22)
-- Neurology & Neurosurgery (#23)
-- Orthopaedics (#16)
-- Pulmonology (#38)
-- Urology (#17)
"A hospital that emerges from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of," said Avery Comarow, U.S. News Health Rankings Editor. "Just 147 hospitals, only about 3 percent of those in the U.S., earned a national ranking in even one specialty. Of those, only the few that ranked very highly in at least six specialties made the Honor Roll."
Additionally, UH Case Medical Center ranked #2 in the State of Ohio. The hospital also is ranked #2 in the Cleveland Metro area and was recognized as high-performing in Psychiatry. University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center ranked #9 in the Cleveland Metro area rankings and was also commended for high performance in Neurology & Neurosurgery.
U.S. News evaluates hospitals in 16 adult specialties. In most specialties, it ranks the nation's top 50 hospitals and recognizes other high-performing hospitals that provide care at nearly the level of their nationally ranked peers. U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or added risk because of other health problems or age. Objective measures such as patient survival and safety data, the adequacy of nurse staffing levels and other data largely determined the rankings in most specialties.
The specialty rankings and data were produced for U.S. News by RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C. Using the same data, U.S. News produced the state and metro rankings.
The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands August 27.
