While our national unemployment rate hovers over 8 percent today, it's estimated there are more than 3 million unfilled jobs in the United States. Our employment crisis is not simply about "creating" enough jobs for Americans—it's about empowering people with the skills to succeed in those jobs. Closing our nation's skills gap will not happen overnight, but we need to start laying the groundwork today.
U.S. News' Jobs in 2020 project goes in-depth into the landscape of our coming workforce. We profile growing industries like computer engineering and scientific research. We spotlight energy and healthcare occupations where a surplus of openings are expected, and list the parts of the country where those hot jobs can be found.
The Jobs in 2020 project uses the latest data to take on major questions, such as:
- Where will the jobs be in 2020?
- Where is our workforce headed—what skills do we have, and where are we underprepared?
- What changes do we need to make now to close the skills gap by 2020 and bring our unemployment rate from historic highs to historic lows?
- What can you do, personally, to improve your chances and your kids' chances of having sought-after skills in tomorrow's economy?
All results will be published here:
"We've written a lot about the skills gap in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields," says Brian Kelly, Editor of U.S. News & World Report. "But the problem is even larger than STEM. To have a competitive, thriving workforce in the future, we need to look more broadly at the areas where the needs of employers and the skills of workers don't match. This starts at an individual level—being informed about the best career and education choices for you, your children, and your community."
The Jobs in 2020 project is sponsored by DeVry University.
