WASHINGTON, May 7, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. News & World Report released today its inaugural rankings of the Best Online Programs for Veterans. These new rankings, which will only be available online at usnews.com, are designed to help veterans and people in the armed forces find programs that best suit their needs.

There will be separate rankings for online bachelor's programs and online master's degree programs in business, education, engineering and nursing.
"Many veterans and people still in active duty have a hard time finding a good educational program that fits their needs," said Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News & World Report. "By ranking programs specifically for this group of people, we hope to make the decision of where to get a degree much easier."
To be ranked, an online degree program had to report that it participates in four key programs that offer many educational benefits to people with military service. The rankings methodology requires institutions to be certified for the GI Bill, participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, be members of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges Consortium and offer at least one credit-granting bachelor's-level course listed in the Defense Activities for Non-Traditional Education Support Catalog of Nationally Accredited Distance Learning Programs. Finally, all schools evaluated in this ranking must have been awarded a numerical rank in the overall 2013 U.S. News Best Online Education Programs rankings, which were released earlier this year.
