CLEVELAND, May 5, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- US mining and quarrying activity, as measured in volumes of nonfuel ore, aggregates, and waste handled, is forecast to total 6.0 billion metric tons in 2021, according to Mining & Quarrying: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. The volume of materials handled at US copper mining operations is expected to continue to outpace all other discrete industry segments, remaining the leading source of metal ore and waste materials. Expansion in domestic construction activity will stoke gains, as growing US production of copper-based building materials will stimulate a rise in ore mining.
Stone quarries are expected to retain its position as the largest source of materials handled in the US industry. New domestic construction activity will drive volume growth. Because stone features a high cost-to-weight ratio, it is uneconomical to ship long distances. Exports and imports of stone, consequently, are negligible.
These and other key insights are featured in Mining & Quarrying: United States. This report forecasts the total activity of US mines and quarries as measured in metric tons of materials handled to 2021. Material handled refers to the excavated volumes of metal ores, industrial minerals, and waste. Total material handled is segmented by targeted resource in terms of:
- copper
- gold
- iron ore
- other metal ores such as lead, molybdenum, and silver
- stone
- sand and gravel
- phosphate rock
- other industrial minerals such as gypsum, industrial clays, and salt.
Mining and quarrying for fuel sources (eg, coal) are excluded from the scope of this report.
To illustrate historical trends, total materials handled, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2006 to 2016.
