U.S. Green Technology Recognizes Tom Courtney's Green Plan for Chicago's 27th Ward
Tom Courtney, candidate for 27th Ward Alderman, has developed a plan that can improve the Chicago River. Courtney is running against incumbent Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr.
CHICAGO, Feb. 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- U.S. Green Technology has recognized Tom Courtney for his efforts in improving the Chicago River through his River Walk idea. If elected, Courtney plans to work toward the redevelopment of the Industrial Corridor in the 27th Ward to provide jobs as well as to revitalize the area along the Chicago River.
The River Walk Project would re-commission the land for use as a River Walk Casino and encourage the development of local businesses in the 27th Ward. It would make the Industrial Corridor environmentally friendly by re-purposing the land for commercial use and reducing the amount of industrial waste being poured into the river.
The Chicago River, which has been degraded through residential and industrial development, is one of the most polluted rivers in the United States. There are several freshwater fish that are prevalent in the river including large-mouth bass, blue gill and catfish. However, fishermen have been warned by the State of Illinois not to eat the fish due to PCB and mercury contamination. A do not eat advisory has been issue for carp that are larger than 12 inches.
"Protecting the environment should be an issue at the forefront of everyone's mind," said Tom Courtney, 27th Ward Alderman Candidate (http://www.courtneyforchicago.com). "New standards for the Chicago River are on the horizon, but we should make the effort now for it to be a cleaner and safer resource."
Courtney, who is challenging controversial incumbent Alderman Walter Burnett, Jr., has suggested some of the additional revenue for the City through the River Walk project could be used to pay for a water treatment plant that would improve the water quality.
