U.S. exaggerates its allegations on Sudan, says the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan

WASHINGTON, June 27, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following is a statement being issued by the Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan:

The press release issued by the U.S. Department of State dated June 26, 2012, propagates exaggerated and fabricated claims about alleged mistreatments of protestors in Sudan. The disturbing intention is to give the public the misleading impression that the very few and sporadic protests are popular and somewhat expanding. The government of Sudan respects, upholds, encourages freedom of expression and maintains public safety.

The statement made suggesting ways to resolve the financial problems was also inappropriate and disingenuous especially in view of the ironic fact that the U.S. has imposed long-standing economic sanctions on the people of Sudan which its officials continue to bewilderingly tout as somewhat effective. Meanwhile the people of Sudan will not so easily forget the devastating implications of these economic sanctions that have led to this point and which continue to exacerbate the economic problems.

The people of Sudan would rather see a constructive engagement coming from the U.S. government, one which begins with the lifting of the unjust economic sanctions and possibly maintaining an impartial role in the ongoing talks between Sudan and South Sudan.
