Recently, former Illinois county treasurer Fred Bathon pled guilty to violating the Sherman Antitrust with respect to Tax Lien Auctions. The NTLA offers vital education and training on the application of antitrust laws in the tax auction arena for both local governments and private citizens. The Sherman Antitrust Act, passed in 1890, prohibits agreements between competitors that interfere with free market conditions, including price fixing and bid rigging.
"The National Tax Lien Association leads the nation in antitrust training as it relates to tax lien auctions. This year we are fortunate to have the U.S. Department of Justice to provide the instruction," states Brad Westover, Executive Director of the NTLA. Previously, the NTLA has hosted attorneys Paul Safran and Brian Dickerson of Roetzel & Andress to conduct training on antitrust violations and proper behavior. Highlights of their presentation can be seen in the Sherman Antitrust Training Video, found on the association's website. The NTLA always expects its members to adhere to the highest standards as outlined in its code of ethics, also found on the website.
"It is our hope that every tax collector, treasurer and tax lien investor in America takes antitrust matters seriously," states Westover.
All participants in the tax lien industry, whether from the private or public sector, are welcome to attend the conference to take advantage of the Justice Department's training. Please refer to www.thentla.com for registration information, or call (561) 449-2484.
