U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Marine Corps Replace Legacy Systems With Jaspersoft Business Management Software
Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Solves Government Data Challenges
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Jaspersoft, the world's most widely used business intelligence platform, today announced the Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Suite has been selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC), to bring more cost savings and flexibility to their BI deployments.
Federal agencies have come to know Jaspersoft for offering powerful, easy-to-use and cost-effective reporting and analysis, well suited for faster, more complex business intelligence needs. Cost-effective business intelligence is critical to efficient government. Jaspersoft significantly reduces the price of these services and allows agencies to better meet the federal CIO's agenda for cost effective, transparent and open standards-based solutions.
U.S. Marine Corps Adopts Jaspersoft, Replacing SAP Crystal Reports
The U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune replaced SAP Crystal Reports with Jaspersoft Business Intelligence Suite. According to Sam Friedman, Business Intelligence Practice Manager for Column Technologies and IT solution architect for U.S. Marine Corps, the Crystal Reports product did not meet the USMC's needs in many areas including:
- Initial costs. Delivering browser-based reporting access in Crystal Reports would have involved substantial licensing costs from an additional product.
- Scaling costs. Scaling Crystal Reports to the required size would require an additional piece of technology resulting in excessive technical complexity and additional cost-prohibitive licensing.
- Support Compliance and Compatibility. The current release of Crystal Reports and SAP Business Objects Enterprise were incompatible with USMC's pre-built web connector. Furthermore, the connector only worked when those products were deployed on a Microsoft Windows platform—not Linux or UNIX.

National Institute of Food and Agriculture Upgrade to Jaspersoft from SAP and Oracle
The USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) chose Jaspersoft as its business intelligence provider, replacing Oracle and SAP. Autonomic Resources, an information technology and service integration firm that serves a number of federal government agencies, including the Department of Defense, assisted the USDA with vendor selection and implementation.
In the face of growing data volumes and complexity, NIFA found that SAP and Oracle's proprietary platforms required long, expensive development cycles that created delays in response to Congressional staff inquiries, and subsequently, delayed the securing of funding. NIFA had used Oracle's application platform for BI, but outgrew the platform when the cost required to manage bigger projects exceeded their budget. NIFA also experienced performance issues when SAP Crystal Reports could not support its data complexity and the cost for a full suite upgrade was not a suitable option.
NIFA successfully met their budget and product requirements by implementing Jaspersoft's Business Intelligence Suite as a part of a commercial open source stack solution also including Linux, Infobright and Talend.

Supporting Quotes
"Jaspersoft's Business Intelligence Suite cut out a significant bottleneck in IT," said Sam Friedman, Business Intelligence Practice Manager for Column IT and agent for U.S. Marine Corps. "With Jaspersoft, U.S. Marine Corps's managers are now empowered to produce their own reports whenever they want them."
"There has definitely been a movement within the federal government to look at open source for controlling costs," said Joe Barbano, a project manager for NIFA at the USDA. "Our CIO is a big supporter of open source, so we had approval from the top down when it came to investigating and implementing open source technologies within our division. For our agency, open source was really an easy sell. We were able to be up and running very quickly and respond much more efficiently to Congressional inquiries – all at a fraction of the cost that proprietary software would have cost us."
"Jaspersoft sees a domino effect in the federal government sector, with more agencies looking to leverage proven open source BI technology," said Jaspersoft CEO Brian Gentile. "Budget-tightening has made Jaspersoft's open source, open-standards model the most effective and efficient method to premium business intelligence. Federal agencies want Jaspersoft as their BI vendor because we have the will and flexibility to continue aggressive innovation delivered to our customers at low costs without vendor lock-in."
