SATURDAY, JUNE 2: NATIONAL TRAILS DAYS
Profile America — Saturday, June 2nd. This is a day for hiking boots, shorts, a bottle of water, and maybe a little insect repellant — it's National Trails Day, a time to get out and experience the beauty of nature firsthand. The day celebrates the nation's network of trails and the volunteers who maintain them — from major ones such as the Appalachian Trail, to thousands of shorter local pathways. More than 1,500 organizations will sponsor events today — from hikes on existing trails to dedication of new ones, workshops, maintenance projects, and equestrian and mountain bike rides. More than 34 million Americans enjoy hiking each year and sales of walking shoes top $4.5 billion annually. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
