U.S. Cellular Praises Administration Support for Release of Wireless Spectrum
CHICAGO, July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- U.S. Cellular today expressed strong support for President Obama's action directing federal agencies, including the FCC, to begin implementing the National Broadband Plan's call for an additional 500 megahertz of commercial spectrum over the next 10 years.
"We are pleased that President Obama has taken this opportunity to strongly support the National Broadband Plan recommendations to free up additional spectrum," said John Gockley, Vice President of Legal and Regulatory Affairs. "We know the FCC is moving forward with plans to develop rules for an auction of the 700 megahertz D-Block spectrum, and we fully support this process. A commercial auction in early 2011, with the opportunity for public-private partnerships, will put this valuable spectrum to work for the benefit of America's consumers and first responders."
"President Obama's action also appears to indicate the Administration's awareness of the need for continued wireless telecommunications expansion, especially in rural America," Gockley continued. "As with broadband Internet, voice and data delivery over a reliable wireless connection is a vital service to which all Americans deserve access. We look forward to working with the FCC and others to ensure that rural America is not left behind as the National Broadband Plan evolves."
