BOSTON, Sept. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, The Honorable Carmen M. Ortiz, will speak at Bunker Hill Community College on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., at the College's Chelsea Campus (175 Hawthorne Street, Bellingham Square, Chelsea, MA 02150). The talk is free and open to the public.

Nominated by President Barack Obama, as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Massachusetts, Ms. Ortiz was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on November 5, 2009. She is the first Hispanic and the first woman to represent Massachusetts as United States Attorney.

U.S. Attorney Ortiz's top priorities include national security and the prevention of terrorism, prosecuting healthcare fraud, defending civil rights, and reducing violent crime and white collar crime. In 2010, she implemented the District's first civil rights initiative, aimed at reinvigorating enforcement efforts of federal civil rights laws.

Ms. Ortiz is a graduate of Adelphi University (B.B.A.) and George Washington University Law School (J.D.). She has received numerous awards, including: Women in Federal Law Enforcement (WIFLE) Foundation, President's Award (2010); George Washington University Law School, J. William Fulbright Distinguished Public Service Award (2010); Alianza Hispana, Lifetime Achievement Award (2010); Massachusetts Women's Bar Association, Pioneering Women of Color Award (2010).

Bunker Hill Community College is the largest community college in Massachusetts. The College enrolls approximately 13,000 students on two campuses and at four satellite locations. BHCC is one of the most diverse institutions of higher education in Massachusetts. Six in ten students are persons of color and more than half of BHCC's students are women.
