ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 24, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army will award seven Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) students with more than $260,000 in ROTC scholarships this week as part of the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament in Charlotte, N.C. These scholarship recipients will be recognized in front of thousands of tournament attendees at the Time Warner Arena in downtown Charlotte. On Thursday, the Army will present three scholarships totaling $78,242 to Winston-Salem State University and, on Friday, two Virginia State University ROTC scholarships totaling $70,194. Finally, on Saturday two deserving students will each receive a scholarship in the amount of $57,325 to Saint Augustine's College.
These promising young students are among the 57 ROTC Cadets at CIAA institutions receiving funds for tuition and educational fees through the Army ROTC program. This year, the Army is supporting Cadets at CIAA schools through scholarship funding totaling more than $735,000. Currently, the Army ROTC offers millions of dollars' worth of merit-based scholarships for students throughout the country to attain a college education. Financial benefits include two-, three- and four-year scholarships, an annual book allowance and a tax-free stipend for living expenses.
The Army's 23-year partnership with CIAA was founded to develop and promote leadership, teamwork and academic excellence. This partnership is a stellar example of the Army's commitment to helping young Americans create their own path to success. As part of the partnership, the Army maintains a strong presence throughout tournament week, bringing awareness to the Army's support of education and leadership development, as well as the more than 150 career opportunities available in the Army.
In addition to the tournament, the Army will visit Hopewell High School, speak at the CIAA Education Day and participate in the CIAA Career Expo in order to provide information about the many benefits of serving in the Army. The Go Army Experience – an interactive display that provides youth the opportunity to connect with extraordinary Soldiers and leading-edge technology – will be featured at the CIAA Fan Fest Thursday through Saturday at the Charlotte Convention Center.
