U.S. Army Awards Two $46,500 Scholarships to Students During CIAA Basketball Tournament
ALEXANDRIA, Va., Feb. 28, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Army will recognize two Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) students with $46,500 ROTC scholarships this week as part of the annual CIAA Basketball Tournament, strengthening the Army and CIAA's three-year partnership to develop and promote leadership, teamwork and academic excellence.
Command Sgt. Maj. Roger Howard and CIAA alumnus Lt. Col. Timothy Chapman, both of U.S. Army Cadet Command, will present Winston-Salem State University students Cadet Kevin Lovell Malone Jr. and Cadet Breanna E. Miller with their scholarships during the 2013 tournament week festivities. Also this week, Lt. Col. James Hunt, Commander of the Raleigh Recruiting Battalion, will administer the Oath of Enlistment to 10 greater Charlotte area Future Soldiers during the CIAA Fan Experience.
Through its partnership with the CIAA, the Army demonstrates its continued commitment to helping young Americans create their own path to success. Malone and Miller are two of more than 60 ROTC Cadets at CIAA institutions receiving funds for tuition and educational fees through the Army ROTC program. More than $750,000 in scholarships are awarded annually to CIAA students on the path to Army officership.
"It's an honor to present these ROTC scholarships to Kevin and Breanna during the CIAA Tournament," said Howard. "The Army's continued partnership with the CIAA reflects our common goal of preparing the nation's young people for successful futures through investments in higher education and leadership development."
Born and raised in Hickory, N.C., Cadet Malone attended Hickory High School where he served as the Cadet Battalion Commander for the Hickory High School JROTC Tornado Battalion. Cadet Malone is enrolled in the Winston-Salem State ROTC program and is a member of the school's marching band, The Red Sea of Sound. The band was recently selected – out of all Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) bands in the country – to participate in a national marching band competition.
Born in Oak Harbor, Wash., Cadet Miller, whose father served in the U.S. Navy, has had a lifelong passion for military service. As a student at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology in Charlotte, N.C., she enrolled in JROTC and quickly rose through the ranks for her exemplary leadership and self-discipline. Cadet Miller served as Battalion Executive Officer and Co-Captain of both the Drill Team and Rifle Team. Today, she is enrolled in the ROTC program at Winston-Salem State, is a Chancellor's Scholar in the Honors Program and was recently named to the Dean's List.
This year marks the Army's third consecutive partnership with the CIAA Basketball Tournament. As part of the partnership, the Army maintains a strong presence throughout tournament week, bringing awareness to the Army's support of education and leadership development, as well as the many career opportunities available in the Army. In addition to the tournament, the Army will have a presence at the CIAA Education Day and Career Expo in order to provide information about the many benefits of serving in the Army and the Army Strength in Action Tour – an interactive display that provides young Americans the opportunity to experience Army life while interacting with Soldiers – will be featured at the CIAA Fan Experience.
