"I felt like I'd already won for being healthy," said Matzkanich.
Matzkanich, 29 other US Airways employees and a flight attendant's husband won prizes, which included ten $2,000 US Airways Vacations gift cards, twenty $600 Apple gift cards and the grand prize, the Mustang, in a raffle. More than 6,000 US Airways employees, spouses and domestic partners who were enrolled in company-sponsored insurance plans completed wellness activities in the Fit for US program between January and March 2012 and were eligible to participate in the drawing.
"Good health helps us lead happier and more productive lives at home and at work. That's good for us as individuals and as a company," said US Airways' Chairman and CEO Doug Parker. "I was delighted to award terrific prizes to thirty-one of our outstanding employees and their loved ones for their decision to lead healthier lives, but the greatest reward of all is good health."
U.S. and Puerto Rico-based employees, spouses and domestic partners enrolled in company-sponsored insurance plans were able to receive a free biometric screening, which is a general health check-up that can identify significant health problems by measuring blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels and body mass index. Once the participants received their biometric screening results, they had the option to complete an online health assessment questionnaire. The screening and questionnaire results are private and are used only by the participant and a trained health advisor to develop a healthy living fitness plan.
The next phase of the Fit for US program, the ten-week Fitness Challenge, starts on May 7. Eligible employees, their spouses and domestic partners will pledge to complete fitness routines and track their progress using social media tools in this free program, which will award a $1,000 travel gift certificate and an Amazon Kindle Touch in a raffle open to all participants who log 150 minutes of physical activity for each week of the challenge.
