US Agricultural Adjuvant Demand to Reach 770 Million Pounds in 2021

CLEVELAND, April 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Demand for agricultural adjuvants is expected to increase 1.8% annually to 770 million pounds in 2021. Gains will be supported by an emphasis on improved pesticide formulation to increase efficiency and minimize environmental damage. The growing attention on pesticide efficiency has led to an increase in the amount of adjuvants used relative to active ingredients; this ratio is expected to continue to increase going forward. These and other trends are presented in Pesticide Adjuvant Market in the US, a new study from The Freedonia Group, a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

Factors supporting the use of adjuvants in agricultural pesticides include:

increased resistance to pesticides in weeds, insects, and diseases
high regulatory burden of developing and marketing new active ingredients, leading to an emphasis on new combinations of existing active ingredients for use in a wider range of applications
rising concern about environmental impact of pesticides, contributing to declining active ingredient loading with improved adjuvants to increase efficiency

Adjuvants for use in corn pesticides account for the largest share of agricultural adjuvant demand. This category exhibited strong growth in the 2006-2011 period as total corn acreage increased in response to biofuel mandates and as pest pressure significantly threatened productivity. Going forward, corn acreage is expected to rise at a more modest pace and increases in pesticide use -- and, therefore, adjuvant use -- will result from the introduction of new GM seed varieties and continued threats from resistant pest populations. Soybeans will also benefit from the introduction of new GM seed varieties marketed for use with specific branded pesticide formulations.
